OK then, let’s start at the beginning.

The Jungle Files is a collection of photographs and facts, that have been put together by a team of rainforest explorers to assist you with your topic work. The information contained in these fact files is designed to be fun, educational, fascinating, gruesome and useful.

Each fact file is quite short and usually contains four or five photographs, along with three or four paragraphs of information. It should only take you a few minutes to read through each file. However, there are almost 150 files in total, so this is not an activity that you can race through in just half an hour. This is a journey that may end up taking you weeks to complete.

The files are divided into different levels, and your challenge is to read through each level, absorbing information as you go. When you get to the end of a level, you will be asked several questions on what you have just read, to see how much you remember. If you can successfully answer these questions, you will then unlock the password to the next level.

You can work through as many levels as you wish, at whatever speed you are most comfortable with. There is no need to progress all the way to the end of the challenge. However, the more you read, the more you will learn about the rainforest. And should you successfully reach the end of the last level, you will have read over 30,000 words! Just as importantly, you will now know more about the rainforests than almost everybody else in Britain.

As you read through the files, you will slowly begin to learn about:

  • the tropical climate and the water cycle

  • the amazing variety of animals that live in the rainforest

  • the endless assortment of plants that grow there

  • the different layers of the rainforest

  • why deforestation is such a serious problem

  • the lives of rainforest people and

  • the grim and ghastly dangers that await you, if you venture into the jungle unprepared

Before you begin reading through Level 1, try clicking on the Gallery button and spend a bit of time exploring this section. The Gallery is not part of the challenge, but it does contain lots of interesting photos and short facts, so it should give you a good idea of what is coming next. Think of it as a warm-up activity, before you tackle the main event.

Will you make it all the way through to the end of the last level? Let’s find out…
